Battlefield 4 announced, Multiplayer Beta coming in 2013 – Video Games Update
Electronic Art’s (EA) PR department got ahead of itself when it revealed the existence of Battlefield 4 on the Origin store page.
The news leaked when EA updated its Origin store page to list the limited edition of the upcoming Medal of Honour: Warfighter priced at $69.99 which comes with a pre-order incentive of access to the multiplayer beta for Battlefield 4.
EA has announced that the beta will begin in fall 2013 which could mean that the next installment in the franchise might also hit the shelves by the end of 2013.
Many gamers are not pleased with the news as Battlefield 3 just came out on October 2011 and gamers were hoping that EA would continue to support the game with downloadable content and expansions before another fully fledged Battlefield title is shipped
out.
Many gamers were also hoping that the next Battlefield game would be Bad Company 3 using the new Frostbite 2 engine which was developed by DICE for Battlefield 3 but now is also being used for the upcoming Medal of Honour: Warfighter.
“Though Battlefield and Medal of Honour Warfighter each offer players a completely unique experience, they are united by their underlying technology base – Frostbite. These are two of the hottest shooters, coming together to deliver a one-two punch of action,
intensity and shooter entertainment,” stated Frank Gibeau, the president of EA Labels, while trying to differentiate between the two Military first person shooters.
The Battlefield 4 announcement disappointed many gamers as now it is clear that EA is also following Activision’s strategy of releasing a Call of Duty game every year with their own shooters. The only difference is that EA will be alternating between Battlefield
and Medal of Honour each year. It also doesn’t help that both the series are being developed on the same engine which makes it really hard to tell them apart.
The last Medal of Honour, which was a reboot of the franchise, was released October 12, 2010 and failed to impress critics and gamers leading to average review scores and poor sales when compared to other shooters released that year.
However, EA has not given up and apparently is trying to push the upcoming sequel with the incentive of early access to the multiplayer beta of the next game in the more successful Battlefield series.
