Battleship displacement question?

What exactly is a battleships displacement?

I am watching "battle 360" on history channel, and have heard the term several times. Please help with this question, thank you!

  1. When talking about ship displacment, think of it this way:

    If you placed the ship into a bath tub, ok a REALY BIG bath tub, filled to the rim with water, the weight of the water that spills out is the "displacement" of the ship.  


  2. the amount of water weight wise the Battleship uses to stay afloat. the weight of the battleship has to be less than it displaces. that is why when a ship gets water inside itit sinks. The water flowing in starts to make the ship heavier causing more displacement of water. causing more water pressure, causing more water to come in.

  3. I don't know if you want the definition of the measurement. But the definition of displacement is "the weight of water displaced by a floating vessel". Meaning the how much amount of water the vessel 'pushes out of the way' weighs.
