Bawadi set a track record in the Swaidan Trading Company Peugeot Handicap on 21st January at the Meydan
On 21st January at Meydan, the Swaidan Trading Company Peugeot Handicap was won by M. bin Shafya trained Bawadi, who initially was scratched from the race and was never meant to be part of the lineup contesting.
A field of fourteen that had three entries of Doug Watson and two of Al Raihe could never have been predicted to be won by a reserve horse, and that also in a dynamic style which led him to strike a new track record.
This success gave jockey Patrick Cosgrave his tenth win of the new season.
"He hurt himself coming out of the stalls the run before last and he had to be taken out a couple of times because he has a habit of getting his front foot stuck in the starting gate, this horse definitely deserved some luck”, said the proud jockey.
Getting tangled at the gate is not something new for Bawadi, but it is surely disturbing for the connections as it becomes an uncertain situation for them to make the future race entries for their horse that ends up getting injured after almost every
start.
Bawadi was lucky at the Sharjah Racetrack in November 2011, when he escaped an accident which could easily have resulted in a serious injury when he bumped during the race and almost fell into the railing.
However, his commendable effort and energy still entitled him to the third position in the Foran Cup.
Not only the winner of Swaidan Trading Company Peugeot Handicap, rather even the runner up, Bin Shamardal, was scratched and then entered to race in the end, following a medical inspection.
Doug Watson trained Masaalek, was third after the winner, and the 9 to 2 favourite of the race, Paschendale, entered by Al Muhairi, finished eighth.
While racing through the track, Bawadi, the son of Medaglia D’Oro out of Chartreuse, broke Godolphin’s Allybar's 2010 record of covering the 1,900 metres in a minute and 57.05 seconds at the Meydan, by taking it further down to a minute and 56.90 seconds.
Through the eighteen career starts that Bawadi has made, this was the second time that he won after clearing away from the maiden stakes on 14th August, 2009.
The beginning of his season has been nothing short of a miracle, and if he puts in an effort of sustaining the performance that he displayed on the track then he will be making more news pretty soon.
