Bay of Plenty tames Wellington by 32-0 in ITM Cup clash - Rugby News
Bay of Plenty has thumped the Wellington side with ease at 32-0 in the fifth round of the ITM Cup at Mt Maunganui on July 31. Bay of Plenty scored four tries to clinch their third victory of the event with an impressive total on the scoreboard. The Steamers
had not given any opportunity to the Wellington side and displayed a flawless defence throughout the game. Meanwhile, Wellington proved to be a piece of cake for the Steamers and could not resist before the rampant Bay of Plenty to avoid a humiliating defeat.
The Bay of Plenty players were too sharp for Wellington from the start of match and put their side on the board very quickly after the kick-off. Taniela Moa constructed the first try of the match for Bay of Plenty and Chris Noakes further extended their
lead to 7-0 with the conversion shot.
Chris Noakes was again into the action during the 20th minute of the match as he kicked a 45 meter long shot into Wellington’s goal to increase his side’s lead to 10-0. Bay of Plenty was well ahead of the Wellington, both with scores and ball
possession. John Pareanga responded to the timely call of Taniela Moa and crossed the try line ten minutes before the interval. Chris Noakes committed no mistake to cash the follow up conversion shot and extended Bay’s lead to 17-0.
Phil Burleigh finished off the first-half with a nicely handled try and put his side in a comfortable position of 22-0 at the midway break.
Noakes resumed the second half for Bay of Plenty with a three pointer but later on the game was played at a snail’s pace from both sides. Bay had deployed more defenders in the middle of the second-half to halt any unexpected attack by Wellington and finally
finished off the match, 32-0.
Chris Noakes contributed 12 individual points in his team’s victory. Bay of Plenty will play its next clash of the ongoing ITM Cup 2011 on August 4 against Northland.
