Bayer Leverkusen beat Schalke 04, hold onto second spot in the Bundesliga
Bayer Leverkusen beat Schalke 04 by 2-0 to hold onto their second spot in the Bundesliga on Sunday, 20 March, 2011.
The home team went in with a 4-5-1 formation. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Eren-Derdiyok-c12675 started upfront for the home side while Rene Adler started in goal.
The visitors on the other hand went in with a 4-4-2 formation. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424 guarded the net for the away side.
Leverkusen got the half underway. It was the visitors though, who looked threatening from very early in the piece.
Soon, the momentum swung in Bayer’s favour as the home side got control of the ball and started passing the ball in the middle. The visitor’s defence looked fragile and it took just 19 minutes to break when Derdiyok netted his shot past Neuer.
Schalke tried to equalise but were not able to break the home side defence which looked far more agile and composed. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christoph-Metzelder-c9168, though rubbed salt on the wounds of the away team after putting the ball into his own net in the 27th minute
which gave the home side a 2-0 advantage. All the attempts to equalise were blocked as the away side finished the first half 2-0 down.
Schalke showed some intent in the second half and in doing so, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Atsuto-Uchida-c6908 became the first player to be booked in the game in the 51st minute.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Ballack-c25270 was shown the yellow.
In spite of trying their level best, the Die Knappen were unable to make their way back into the game as the referee bought the game to a close in favour of the Werkself.
This win for Leverkusen meant that Jupp Heynckes’ side stays second in the Bundesliga with 55 points. Schalke 04 on the other hand remained at the 10th spot.
Schalke 04 will travel away to take on St. Pauli on Friday, 1 April, 2011 while Bayer Leverkusen will face 1. FC Kaiserslautern the next day.
