Werkself have secured the signing of striker Junior Fernandes on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Leverkusen had a mixed season last term as they finished in fifth place with 54 points to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The side had a steady start to the season but the form dipped in the second-half of the campaign which
led to the sacking of manager Robin Dutt. However, the team ended the term impressively and secured European football.
Club chairman, Wolfgang Holzhauser, insisted that the club has acquired a very good striker in the form of Fernandes and is confident that the Chilean will be a huge success in the Bundesliga. He added that the player has immense
potential and has a great eye for goal which is why Leverkusen showed interest in signing him.
The chief added that the side needed to bolster its attacking options after the departure of Eren Derdiyok to Hoffenheim earlier this summer. He admitted that the arrival of Fernandes will provide some good cover in attack and
is looking forward to the player’s performances in the next campaign.
“We wanted Junior Fernandes because, after the departure of Eren Derdiyok, there was a vacancy going forward. We are glad that we could get this very talented player to join us and we believe we will become more competitive with
this transfer,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller is convinced that his side have pulled a coup by bringing the highly-rated striker to the BayArena in this summer’s transfer window. He expressed his satisfaction in the
signing and is hopeful that the Chilean international plays to his full potential.
“Junior Fernandes has everything you need from a modern offensive player. He is physically strong and technically robust, fast, and good in front of goal. We are sure that he will prevail in the Bundesliga,” he concluded.
