Bayern Munich: 2010/11 season at a glance – Bundesliga special
Bayern Munich is regarded as one of the most successful clubs in European history and the most successful one in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904. The Munich giants have won a record 22 League titles, 15 German Cup titles and five European trophies in an illustrious history. But the season gone by was one to forget for the Munich faithful.
The Bavarian giants finished third on the Bundesliga table with 65 points and qualified for the UEFA Champions League Play-offs round. The club failed to repeat the success achieved the previous season and failed to win a trophy this term.
Bayern reached the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League to avenge the defeat they suffered to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan last year in the final but ended up on the losing side. It was another sorry performance in the semi-final of the DFB Pokal against Schalke when Louis van Gaal’s side had a brilliant opportunity to reach the final given the match was played at Allianz Arena in front of the home crowd, but Die Knappen won the clash 1-0, piling more misery on an already under-fire manager.
Furthermore, Dutchman Louis Van Gaal faced the axe when he lost a crucial third place clash against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hannover-96-c39492 in April and was replaced by Assistant coach Andries Jonker.
It was an unexpected season and the club have taken heavy measures to make sure the next season is not a repeat. Former Bayer Leverkusen manager, Jupp Heynckes, has taken charge ahead of the next season after a successful second placed finish with the Werkself. The Munich heavyweights have also been linked to many of the top European talents and the fans can expect some quality additions to the squad this summer.
Season High
The club’s brilliant 5-1 performance against rivals Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena in April was certainly their best performance of a rather inconsistent season. The team was under a lot of pressure to achieve Champions League football as Hannover were ahead in third place with a two point advantage.
Mario Gomez scored an amazing hat-trick to lead the hosts to a superb win over their rivals and reignited their hopes of securing a third-placed finish which they eventually did.
Season Low
Bayern had the advantage of an away goal from the first-leg of the knock-out stage of the Champions League against Inter Milan. The Bavarians needed a draw to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition in the return leg. But a pathetic performance in the second-half of the tie led to the elimination of the German giants.
Bayern were leading 2-1 at half-time and at 3-1 on aggregate looked most certain to progress but some poor defending and shades of complacency from the home side resulted in an awesome comeback from the Milan giants. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Goran-Pandev-c15161 scored the winner in the dying moments to take his side through on away goals.
Star Player
Mario Gomez was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch for Bayern Munich in the season gone by. The German international was written off by many after a poor maiden campaign with Bayern and also lost his place in the starting line-up. But the striker made a stunning comeback last season, scoring 39 goals in 45 appearances and was also the League’s top goal scorer.
