Bayern Munich boss tips Mario Gomez to shine
Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal has suggested that Mario Gomez will impress for the club over the next few weeks after the striker marked his return to the starting line-up with a bang.
The 25-year-old made only his second Bundesliga start of the season against Hannover on Saturday 16 October and repaid Van Gaal’s faith in him by firing in all three goals in a 3-0 win.
With his side struggling in the league, the coach was inspired to field the attacker after he netted in Germany’s 2012 UEFA European Football Championship qualifying match against Kazakhstan last week
and was delighted by Gomez’ performance, telling his club’s official website that he expected more of the same from the player in the next few games.
van Gaal said that: “We didn’t play particularly well in the first half, but we scored with our first chance, which is always good. We were much better after Bastian Schweinsteiger came on in the second
half. Mario Gomez scored for his national team, and now he’s scored three for us. It's extremely important for a striker, because his confidence will return now. I reckon we’ll see a very good Mario Gomez over the next few weeks."
Gomez points to freed miners as inspiration
Gomez pointed to the plight of the rescued Chilean miners as his source of inspiration, with one of the freed 33 men having the same name as himself while he also wears the shirt number 33 and scored three
goals.
He said that: “You always have more opportunities and chances to show what you can do when you play the full 90 minutes. It all happened for me, but I also benefited from three excellent assists. I must
thank the people of Chile. When I saw that one of the first miners brought to the surface was called Mario Gomez, I knew that it was going to be my match. These goals are a sign of destiny."
