Bayern Munich full-back Philipp Lahm has claimed that he is comfortable in playing as both right-back and left-back. He admitted that he can play on both sides as a defender but his role changes. The defender claimed that he is more comfortable defending
as a right-back whereas when he plays on the left, he has more attacking options.
The German international played as a right-back in the previous season but in this campaign he has returned to his natural left position due to the arrival of former Schalke defender Rafinha.
Lahm admitted that he is comfortable in both positions and loves to play behind Arjen Robben on the right and Franck Ribery on the left. However, the player insisted that he can attack more when he plays on the left side as Ribery stays back when he moves
forward.
“The big difference for me is whether I'm playing on the left or the right, rather than who's in front of me. It's not just a case of Robben or Ribery after all. I feel more comfortable defending on the right, but I've got more attacking options down the
left flank,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The captain stressed on the importance of dominating possession in the match and admitted that the team works really hard on that. He added that sometimes the game has to played with a lot of pace which the players have to improve this season.
The defender said that attacking on the counter was the side’s major problem in the previous season and they will have to work on improving their mistakes this time around.
“We worked on having a lot of possession last season, like we do now. That's always important, but you have to up the pace sometimes as well. Getting forward at speed when the space is there - that's one area where we've got to do better,” he concluded.
The Bavarian giants will face Hamburg SV in their next Bundesliga fixture at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, August 20.
