Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has criticized the club’s fans for protesting against teammate Manuel Neuer. The player claimed that he is unable to understand the reasons behind the activity and offered his support for the
German international.
Manuel Neuer’s transfer from Schalke 04 this summer has been subject to controversy this summer as a group of Bavarian faithful are not willing to accept the player at the club because of the intense rivalry with Die Knappen.
The Bayern board had also issued a statement regarding the protests earlier this month and had warned the groups to stop the negative propaganda against the shot stopper. But the protests have continued after that and were also
evident in the LIGA total! Cup in which the club was participating.
Lahm stated that nobody within the squad can understand the behaviour of the group of the fans. He claimed that the hostile protests have been hurting the spirit of the player and could well affect the performances of the German
number one.
The captain claimed that the fans should encourage their players and offer the support but this has not been in the case of Manuel Neuer. He urged the hostile fans to stop the protests and praise one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
“Nobody within the squad can understand the reasons behind the hostile protests against Manuel Neuer. The fans should offer their unconditional support to their own players,” he was quoted as saying.
The German international added that the abuses against the player are hurting the team as a whole, not only the player alone. He claimed that the team needs support to make a good comeback this season after a rather disappointing
campaign last term.
Lahm stated that Bayern has the quality and some world-class players and would surely be one of the favourites to win the Bundesliga title.
