Bayern Munich get the better of Eintracht Braunschweig in a DFB Pokal first round match
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich travelled away from home to take on the second division outfit Eintracht Braunschweig in the first round of their DFB Pokal encounter. The match was played on Monday, August 1, and the Bavarians won by a comfortable 3-0 margin.
Thomas Muller, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bastian-Schweinsteiger-c7374 and Mario Gomez registered their names on the score sheet as the home side conceded two penalties for fouls on Thomas Muller on both occasions.
Braunschweig went into the game as underdogs but they got heart from the fact that clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Werder Bremen and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfL-Wolfsburg-c40881 were earlier dumped out of the same competition by the minnows. Munich went into the game without two of their
most dangerous wingers in Franck Ribery and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arjen-Robben-c6521.
The duo was left out by manager Jupp Heynckes in order to give them time to recover from their respective injuries ahead of the club’s opening Bundesliga game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, August 7, at Allianz Arena.
Newly recruited striker Nils Petersen got a place in the starting XI alongside goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424, who was also snapped up during the summer transfer window from Schalke.
The Bavarians made a bright start to the game and were looking ominous in the opening stages. The home side had no answers to the relentless Munich moves and were put under pressure from the very first minute. Striker Thomas Muller was fouled inside the
box on the ninth minute mark and the referee pointed towards the penalty spot. Gomez, Bundesliga top goalscorer for the 2010/11 season, stepped up to take the spot-kick and converted it successfully to give his side an early advantage. The visitors continued
to attack as the Bavarian defenders and goalkeeper were left as mere spectators.
Braunschweig never really threatened Munich’s defence as they were on the back foot for majority of the game. It was just a matter of time before Bayern doubled their lead and Schweinsteiger converted the second penalty after a foul on Muller, again. The
goal came in the 39th minute and the half drew to a close with score line at 2-0.
The hosts had no answers to the Bayern attacks and the story was no different in the second half. Eintracht did manage to hold back the visitors for most of the second half but the third goal was destined to come and it came from Muller himself in the 83rd minute.
The score line remained the same as Bayern completed a comfortable victory and qualified for the next round. Manager Heynckes also confirmed about Robben and Ribery’s inclusion in the opening match of the new Bundesliga campaign.
