Bayern Munich pleased after passing Zurich test in the Champions League play-offs
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich successfully played out their play-off tie with the Swiss side FC Zurich and find themselves in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. The Bavarians finished the 2010/11 Bundesliga season third on the table and as
a result did not make it directly to the group stages of Europe’s elite competition.
The manager Jupp Heynckes was delighted with the win, saying that if anyone deserved victory on Tuesday, it was his side.
Bayern had earlier defeated Zurich in the first leg by a 2-0 margin courtesy http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bastian-Schweinsteiger-c7374 goals. The match was played on Wednesday, August 17, the Allianz Arena. Zurich, who needed three goals in the second leg to qualify, went
behind through a Mario Gomez strike as early as the seventh minute. That goal virtually closed doors on the hosts as they needed to score four against a well accomplished Bayern defence.
Heynckes was all praise for his side for putting up a professional show away from home. He thought that his team could have scored more goals had they been able to convert the missed chances. The manager, though, breathed a sigh of relief at this victory
and urged his side to turn their focus back on the league for the time being.
While talking to the reporters, former Bayer Leverkusen manager enthused, "After our goal, we were not nervous anymore because defensively we are a very good team and allow little to happen in the back. It may have looked easy but we played very good football."
Goal scorer Mario Gomez was also excited at his strike that helped his side qualify for the group stages. This was Gomez’s second goal of the season having earlier scored in his side’s 5-0 win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hamburger-SV-c39485 in the league last weekend.
He concluded by saying, "We wanted that early goal to settle our nerves and for the rest of the game we followed through exactly like we should do."
Bayern’s group opponents will be revealed in Thursday’s draw as the Bavarians prepare for Kaiserslautern’s challenge this Saturday.
