Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness urges Arjen Robben not to change his playing style
Bayern Munich president, Uli Hoeness, has urged Arjen Robben not to change his playing style despite being criticised by former players for his selfishness. He also predicted a tough Champions League encounter for Jupp Heynckes’ men against Manchester City
on Wednesday.
Hoeness was talking ahead of the Reds Champions League game against Roberto Mancini’s men which is a must-win encounter for the English side.
He also confirmed about the absence of Robben and Toni Kroos from the game against City. The duo have been suffering from flu and have been declared unfit to take part in Wednesday’s game.
The president believes that Bayern could go on to win the encounter despite playing away from home for the last time in group A. He admitted to City’s dominance at home but questioned their credibility in the Champions League, despite their unbeaten domestic
record this season.
When asked about Arjen Robben, Hoeness mentioned that the winger is very important for the club despite the recent criticism by former players.
He was of the view that the Dutchmen’s selfishness is the best weapon he possesses and should keep on adapting the same style regardless of what others have in store for the winger.
While praising the Netherlands international, the president added:
“In the last 10 minutes he can always decide a game - with a shot into the corner, a strong dribble or a sure-headed penalty kick. We need him. Arjen must every now and then look for the one-on-one. When he changes his playing style, you can take the angle
out of him."
Robben recently returned from a long term groin injury against the reigning champions, Borussia Dortmund, and played for just 30 minutes in the last league game against Werder Bremen.
The winger came on in the 60th minute, replacing David Alaba, and scored both goals from the spot on the 69th and 83rd minute mark to stamp his authority in the Bundesliga.
Robben is still not fit enough to last the 90 minutes and as a result has been left out of the game against the Citizens on Wednesday.
