Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez looking forward to take on Zurich in the Champions League play-off
Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has expressed desire of leading his side to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. The player was talking ahead of the game against FC Zurich later tonight.
Bayern finished the 2010/11 season third on the table and will have to play a two legged play-off tie with the Swiss opposition. The First leg is due to be held at Allianz Arena on Wednesday, August 17.
Gomez mentioned that Munich will have their work cut out in front of an impressive Zurich squad. He reckoned that the Swiss side are expected to give a tough competition and the Bavarians will have to stay firm and relax. The striker expressed confidence
in his talented line-up, urging them to play their ‘A’ game, which the team hasn’t been able to show so far this season.
Munich started their campaign with a loss at home to Borussia Monchengladbach. Die Roten were fortunate to have survived the Wolfsburg scare one week later and came out on top by a 1-0 margin. The Bundesliga giants were lucky as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Patrick-c29254 Helmes’ goal was
disallowed in the first half after a harsh offside call.
Zurich, on the other hand, are fresh from a victory over the Swiss champions http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079, registering a 2-1 win at the weekend. Both the teams are expected to be involved in a mouth watering affair with Bayern having the edge of playing the first leg at home.
Gomez was also looking forward to welcome his former Stuttgart teammate, Ludovic Magnin. The striker claimed exchanging messages with the latter, who confirmed about Zurich’s hard work going into Wednesday’s game.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ludovic-Magnin-c22620 a couple of days ago, and we've already discussed the match,"
Gomez was the Bundesliga’s top goal getter last season with 28 strikes to his name. The 26-year-old has so far made 38 goals from 63 league appearances. He has 19 goals under his belt from 47 international caps until now.
Both Bayer and Zurich will compete for the second leg on Tuesday, August 23.
