Bayern Munich's Mark Van Bommel yearns for more goals
FC Basel’s anticipation ended up in humiliation after Bayern Munich scourged them at Allianz Arena on December 08, 2010. Basel’s chance to progress to the final 16 of the Champions League was devastated by the 3 - 0 clinical and relaxed victory by the German
club. Bayern coach Louis van Gaal was pretty much content with his team’s fifth UEFA Champions League victory but skipper Mark Van Bommel isn’t happy with the win, less impressed with German club’s performance and wants some more goals.
A couple of goals from the Frenchman Franck Ribery, his first for Bayern since April, and a simple tap in by Ukrainian star footballer Anatoliy Tymoschuk fastened the win in Munich this Wednesday. FC Bayern finished at the top of Group E and were the finalists
in the last season. Tougher matches would be played in February 2011’s round of sixteen, and would be drawn in Nyon at 17 December, 2010. Van Bommel wasn’t astonished by his team’s win over a limited side. Disgruntled skipper, Van Bommel, expressed his views,
“We started the game badly. There was not sufficient movement and calls for the ball until Franck Ribery opened the scoring, we should have scored some more goals, but this is important for us to take some confidence for our next contest against St. Pauli.”
FC Bayern have advanced to the next stage along with AS Roma while Basel finished third in Group E. But all is not glowing for the German side, there are some serious concerns around the Allianz Arena to qualify for next season’s competition as Bayern would
need to finish in the top two of Bundesliga to be confident of a place in European League, the most lucrative tournament. There are not many sides who have managed to succeed in five of their group matches. Bayern’s 2 - 0 defeat to German League strugglers
Schalke left them seventh on Bundesliga table, 17 points behind the surprise leaders Dortmund. Van Gaal already confessed that the gap is too big to fill. Bayern have won their last seven home games in European League, but they have been inconsistent with
their performance as they lost four matches in Bundesliga this season.
FC Bayern are all set to welcome their long term injured players including Dutch playmaker Robben, Croatia striker Ivica Olic and German veteran Miroslav Klose. They would need to muster up all the firepower to end up their feat of reaching the finals.
