Bayern Munich’s newly appointed sporting director Matthias Sammer admits his side are not willing to bid big for Javi Martinez.
The Bavarian club has gone through some high profile changes over the summer. Following the UEFA Champions League final disappointment and another trophyless campaign the club’s President Uli Hoeness decided to make changes at the top.
Meetings with the supervisory board and the directors saw the Bayern supremo sack Christian Nerlinger the club’s Sporting director. Matthias Sammer, the former Stuttgart manager, was lined-up to replace him. The 44-year old left his post as DFB’s technical director in order to join the Bavarian giants.
The former Borussia Dortmund player is understood to be assessing the club’s transfer policy and all the matters concerning the senior squad.
Before his appointment, FCB were thought to be interested in signing Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao after receiving positive reports from their scouts. Bayern have not been able to fully replace their skipper Van Bommel after his departure to AC Milan.
They have tried and tested the likes of Tymoschuk, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bastian-Schweinsteiger-c7374 in that role. The latter’s attacking side of the game severely suffered after playing in a defensive midfield role.
It is understood that the club’s recent target is likely to cost them a fortune, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 is valued at 35-40 million Euros by his club. Sammer insists that he is well aware of the player’s talents after positive reports from the club’s scouts. He believes the club are determined to find out more about their potential signing before spending anything on him.
"I know Javi Martinez pretty well as a player, but I intend to get to know him really well. The people at Bayern who have been monitoring him are of the opinion that he is very good. Let's just wait and see what happens," he is quoted as saying in an interview.
The 44-year old admitted Martinez is a top player, but he conceded that top players have huge price tags. The former Stuttgart manager revealed that due to FCB’s strict spending policy, the club will not be paying crazy money for the midfielder.
"He has a lot of quality, but quality comes at a price. That's why he is quite expensive. One can always make some crazy signings, but nothing unreasonable. We have a certain responsibility toward the club,” he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Bayern’s new sporting director is understood to make a few changes to the club’s spending policy. He will follow the club’s strict transfer policy and is understood to focus more on developing homegrown players.
