Beach Volleyball: The king of summer sports
With the summer season in full swing and the kids at home, people are looking for several options that could engage their children in productive activities. Some children will opt for indoor activities that will generally involve video games whereas others
will look for outdoor options. If your kid still has not made up his or her mind about what to do this summer, let them try beach volleyball.
For those of you living near the coast, there can be no better alternative than to spend the day engaged in an activity that can involve not only your child but you as well. This easy to understand and easy to play sport can provide you with a very enriching
family experience where you can bond with your younger children.
Even if all you afternoon are not free to be able to go to the beach, playing volleyball at the sea-side can be an attractive idea for kids. In this way, the children will get physical exercise along with spending time with their friends in a productive
manner. Not only that, you will not have to cater to sulking teenagers during the summers anymore.
There are no complications in getting started at beach volleyball. Professionally speaking, the sport limits the number of players on each team to be two, with one team on each side of the net. However, if the game is intended to be played in an informal
manner, than the more players there are, the merrier it will be.
As with regular volleyball, the purpose of the game is not to let the ball touch your side of the court and try as hard as you can to make it fall onto your opponent’s end. The court of course, would be a sand court as opposed to the hard ones used in regular
volleyball. Along with this, the players playing beach volleyball do not make use of shoes, as bare feet provide better grip and maneuvering in the sand.
For those kids who have been used to playing indoor volleyball, a slight adjustment would need to be made regarding the rules. One team is allowed to touch the ball a total of three times before sending it over to the other side of the net, with no player
consecutively touching the ball. The three touch rule applies in beach volleyball as well but with the slight modification of counting the block as a touch too.
Likewise, beach volleyball does not allow for an overhand pass to be made while the player is on the receiving end of the serve. Also, it is illegal to use the overhand pass while attacking in beach volleyball.
As the numbers of players are less in beach volleyball, the size of the court is smaller than that of regular volleyball as well. However, if all your kids want to do is have fun, this limitation is not necessary to restrict their fun.
As Karch Kiraly, the great beach volleyball player put it, the game is not only good for the heart it is also good for the soul. “The beach game taught me great lessons about how to elevate the play of my teammate, or teammates, and how to anticipate and
expect the ball so much more than the indoor game ever could. It taught me — even forced me — to be a much better all-around player.”
