Qualifier bracket - 27th September, 2010
In the first round of qualification on Tuesday, 12 teams made it to the main draws.
Sri Lanka 1 beat India/USA defeats Thailand
In the first battle, Sri Lanka’s Sagari Gunasinghe / Sujeewa WW collided with Christie Dias / Danish Dias from India. The Sri Lankan pair was smarter than the Indians would have thought. They were too quick on the court as they won in 19 minutes to post a 21-5 and 21-2 victory in two sets.
In the second match of the first round, the American pair of Heather Hughes and Michelle Moriarty went against Arsa Duanpen and Chompunut Youpukdee from Thailand. The U.S. team maintained their dominance from the start as they were equipped with a number of tricks. As a result, Thailand lost the opening two sets 21-8 and 21-16 to grant victory to America.
Spain forfeit match against Italy and Greece defeat Sri Lanka 2
Maria Corral and Ana Maria Vidal of Spain forfeited their third match against the Italian pairing of Cristiana Parenzan and Federica Tonon. According to the SWATCH FIVB Rule 7.4.1, if a team refuses to play after being summoned to do so, it forfeits the match with a 0-21, 0-21 win for their opponents.
The following contest saw Greek players JoAnna Papageorgiou and Christina Roubanis on the sand against Geethika Lalani Gunawardana and Leena Sandamali Somarathna form Sri Lanka 2. The pair from Greece demonstrated their beach volleyball skills and captured both the sets with a 21-9 and 21-10 win. With this win, the Greek pair qualified for the Main Draws scheduled to be held on the 28th of September.
India 2 and Kazakhstan join winner’s squad
Ashya Basam and Rose Christyroselin from host country India celebrated their victory in the 5th match of the first round. The team was challenged by another Indian pairing of Srilatha Latha and Kanaka Mahalaxmi. Ashya/Rose used their power serves in the game but Srilatha/Mahalaxmi blocked well to save many points by their sharp moves. Nonetheless, Ashya/Rose were smart enough to find the perfect gaps and hit powerful shots in targeted areas to win clever points during the match. Once they picked up the lead, there was nothing which could hold them back from a 21-9 victory in the first set.
On the other side of the net, Srilatha and Mahalaxmi followed a different approach in the second set. Eventually, Ashy Basam and Rose Christyroselin won the second set 21-15 to qualify for the Main Draw.
In the last qualifying match, Lyudmila Issayeva and Inna Rakhmatulina from Kazakhstan outplayed R Anitha and MS Swapna from India. The match took 26 minutes to conclude where the Kazak ladies won 21-5 and 21-10 in the end.
The 6 victorious teams reserved their seats in the Main Draw of the BSNL Chennai Challenger Tournament.
