Beach Volleyball Update: Colombia crushes Paraguay on local sands
The Women’s Junior South American Beach Volleyball Championship is in full swing this week. The Confederation South American de Volleyball (CSV) is playing a vital role in conducting this exciting beach volleyball extravaganza in the city of Aratoca, Colombia.
Locally it is called the CSV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.
This is the qualification phase, which will provide an opportunity to the aspiring beach volleyball stars to show their thirst and ambition for playing on the big platform of London 2012 Olympic Games. The CSV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup is basically
the qualification round, which will rout the victorious teams to the Olympic Games. Ten South-American teams are battling out this important qualification round.
In the succession of game, the duos from Colombia and Paraguay clashed on Thursday, 14th October, 2010 at Aratoca, Colombia. The host-pair was comprised of Dalgis Villalobos and Kelly Medina, while Paraguay was represented by Bethany Hair and
Katrin Thiede. The players of both teams were pumped up and demonstrated excellent effort to clinch victory. The Colombian duo proved their steel against opposite side and dismissed them by posting 21-16 and 21-8 in two straight sets.
First Set
The Colombian pair opened the match with strong serves and created a good impression on the challenger side. Dalgis Villalobos delivered flawless jump-serves and quickly took her position on the sand. The good chemistry and perfect timing of Dalgis and
Kelly provided home-side an extra advantage. They swiftly built the lead over their opponents. On the side of the net, Paraguayan players put nice effort in the beginning but they suffered in service and defence.
The faulty serves and too many unforced ball reception errors dragged them under huge pressure. Somehow, they managed to bring little stability in their game and returned the ball in Colombian court. The score shifted up and it put more thrill in the game.
Dalgis and Kelly grabbed on every ball and saved points by superb digging and diving in the court. Kelly was fast to bump on her partner’s quick passes.
The useful lead of 3 points after the first technical timeout provided them an advantage to further stretch the gap of points. They hit confidence shots and took their score to the verge of victory in first set. Paraguayan Bethany Hair attempted authentic
cut shots but Colombians penetrated their cruising spikes with confidence. Ultimately, with the help of a nice kill, Colombia put an end to the first set at 21-16.
Second Set
The Colombian pair was totally charged up with the sense of victory. They had defined the right dimension for them to move in. The second set also came successful for them. They followed the same approach and dominated the other side with commanding spikes
and better defence. On contrary, the Paraguayan ladies lost energy and made feeble attacks. Katrin Thiede of Paraguay was on the front line. She threw her hands up in the air to block the Colombian hotshots but the ball dropped outside the line frequently.
Colombia was ahead in the game due to their on-the-spot hits.
Dalgis directed the ball in perfect spaces and also contributed points by hitting the ball in corners. After the initial six points in the second set, the players traded sides but the game continued with the same behaviour. Colombian top-guns were in commanding
position and they heavily influenced their competitor side. The difference of points was slightly increasing and Colombia could smell the sense of victory.
They hit a few more shots and added points to their score. They attacked Paraguayan side with convincing shots but at the same time, they restricted them to low score. Paraguay could only touch the mark 8, while Colombia declared victory by achieving the
match point.
The Colombian duo bagged match victory and kept their 2012 Olympic home alive.
