Beach Volleyball special: Is it all about Bikinis? Korea suffers.
The wonderful sport of Beach Volleyball is often charged with the promotion of over sexuality. The game is considered obscure in many parts of the world, especially in eastern part of the world. The Asian countries are the best example in this regard, where
people think that beach volleyball carries a stubborn reputation. The public perception about the game is that girls prance around on the beach wearing bikinis and have rare odd enjoyment to promote vulgarity. In the recent memory, the BSNL Chennai Tournament
in India only featured the male competitions and skipped the ladies part.
Likewise, Korea is facing the same problems. The country has been competing in the international championship since past two decades. The Korean Beach Volleyball Federation (KBF) has played an instrumental role in promoting the game in country but still
faces a lot of trouble. Korea’s National Beach Volleyball team member, Yang Tae-young disclosed her thoughts,
“People have a strong bias against this sport, thinking only about bikinis and summer. I know it`s not easy but I`ll do my best to attract attention to beach volleyball.”
However, the head coach of Korean team, Kim Kyung-Woon is happy with the progress going on in team. Additionally Kim also coaches Hongik University in Seoul. The optimistic coach said,
“We`re fortunate that we can train even this much. I am concerned about player morale.” The KBF took a big step when it separated from the Korean Volleyball Association in 2004. The Beach Volleyball had a great challenge to work out good reputation
for country.
The Korean beach volleyball duos have been featured on the international circuit but country lacks in a lot aspects of game. The players need to bring more discipline and build more stamina.
The sport of beach volleyball was selected as an official at Bangkok Asian Games in 1998, which created an opportunity for Korea display their talent but Korea gave up competing due to budget constraints. Korea put a great effort and built a team in 2002
but failed to create any spark. The 2006 Doha Asian Games was another chance for Korea to show up at the podium but the country didn’t send a team to participate in the event. Currently, China, Japan and Thailand are the top three teams in Asian Beach Volleyball,
while Korea is also trying to follow their footsteps and crop out good results. China is ruling the world of beach volleyball with top-seeded Chen Xue and Zhang Xi.
The game has great features, which need to be acknowledged. However, it is only possible if people will change their stance and start thinking positively.
