Question:

Beach locations for family reunion

We are trying to find a location for our family reunion near a beach. 10 years ago we had a great time in Captiva Island, FL but replicating that experience is too pricey today. Looking for a similiar location/experience but not as expensive. Needs: Want to rent 4-5 homes within relative close proximity, 1 of the larger houses needs to be oceanfront with a large family room/porch for gatherings with the entire group. All others houses can be off beach. Need a private pool or pool access for at least one of the houses. Would like to do 1st week of January but concerned about it not being warm enough so instead we are focused in first week in June before it gets too hot. Wondering whether Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach might be good options and if so, which one? For activities,we'll spend lots of time at the beach, golf and eating out. Ages range from 83 year old grandma to 8 families with primarily college aged, 20-something children.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  1. i would suggest myrtle beach me and my husband just went there for our honeymoon it was beautiful hilton head is nice but it is a lot more expensive. i think myrtle beach would be perfect.

  2. we rent on Tybee Island Georgia which is about 20 minutes across the bridge from Savannah- an awesome, beautiful city with plenty to do. BUT, as you mentioned, the cost can be prohibitive. It seems the actual beachfront homes were REALLY expensive- like up to $5-7,000 a week! They DID have pools though, as well as every other amenity you could imagine! Can 2 families stay in the same house? We rent one that has 4 bedrooms plus a rec room with 5 twin beds- there are also 3 bedrooms with a king in each and another bedroom with 2 twins and a sofa sleeper in the LR- it sleeps 15 in a comfortable way and has a hot tub, large yard and screened porch. It's about $2000 for the week. Anyway, that's MY experience... there are loads of rental agencies listed if you just google Tybee Island (or any other location you are looking at) There IS an agency that has 4 or 5 homes on the same block, which would suit your needs- I can't remember which one, but with a little research of the different agencies, you would easily locate it. There is plenty to do on Tybee.... dolphin tours, Forts Pulaski and Jackson, ghost tours in Savannah, great food, lovely beaches, an old lighthouse and golf in Savannah. Hope you and your family have a great reunion! We'll all be there the 2nd week of June- and have "our house" reserved already!

  3. You can probably find exactly what you're looking for on Kiawah Island, SC. I much prefer it to Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach. However, I can't vouch for the price; it might not be much cheaper than Captiva. Good luck.
