  1. Aim for the boiler maker, heart, lungs, etc. It would be a good idea to have some sort of back up rifle or pistol.

    Good Hunting...

  2. As with all big game, behind the front shoulder. But as for a secondary location in between the eyes? But there really is no replacment for behind the front shoulder, and just so you know it does not matter what weapon you are using a bear is still a bear.

    Here is the anatomy of a bear:

  3. yes, Davey Crockett had a black powder rifle, as did pretty much every other man in North America before 1900.

    To shoot a bear to kill it, you want to hit it either in the brain, or in the heart.  Bears have thick skulls so brain shots can be kind of tricky, so heart is best, brain is probably second best.

    Around the heart is the lungs and liver, you shoot a bear in the lungs or liver instead of the heart, it will die, but not quite as quickly, so the bear has a chance to run off.  Luckily this kind of wound bleeds a lot, so you just follow the blood trail to the dead animal.

  4. Here is some info on shot placement on bears with pictures;

    The black powder rifle best for bear is .54 cal and up, the .45 cal is just not the ticket for black bears, but have been used for such.

    Black powder lead balls are soft and will flatten out quickly on bone. The skull of a bear slopes at an angle, there fore a soft lead ball will flatten out and glance off the bears skull. So bear hunters aim right behind the shoulder for a lung/ heart shot. Bow hunters aim for the same place;

    You will note a bears lungs are more forward than other big game, so that should be remembered.

    I would suggest the newer conical sabot bullets they make for black powder rifles. They penetrate better have far better expansion control and retained energy.

    Be WARNED!!! After you shoot the bear give it time to die. Looking for a wounded bear in thick brush is asking for this;

    Once hit the bear will usually drop, get up and flee a few yards, and lay down; if you do not pursue it. Give it about a ½ hour or so then follow the blood trail. If you hit it right it will be dead in a few minutes. If the bear is very close a shot to the eye or ear will drop it IF you are a good shot and the bear is not moving much. If its standing and your lower than it, a shot at its throat right where the skull and spine meet will drop it. But it would be better to wait till the bear is farther away to lessen the risk of it turning on you if your shot is off.

    It standing at a distance, a heart shot in the chest is best.

    A tree stand is highly recommended and far safer than on the ground.

    NOTE; This info is for black bears that I gave, brown or griz are another matter with a BP gun.

  5. as with most big game, heart and lung shot. dont try to take a head shot as their skulls are so thick it may just p**s off the bear. nothing worse then a pissed off bear running at you.

  6. Right behind the shoulders and try to hit the heart or lungs or both.

  7. Right behind the front shoulder just the same as harvesting Deer.* Heart & Lung shot.*~
