How many species of bears still exist, and what are they.

    There will be other species/subspecies of bear that i have not mentioned that i do not know.

  6. Eight species altogether. There are many subspecies but they are so biologically similar that they aren't segregated enough to be included as a different species. For example a grizzly is in fact a brown bear.

    Note that the grizzly bear and Kodiak bear are not species - these are simply subspecies of the brown bear.

    In response to VanDerVaart's answer, neither the honey bear nor koala bear are bears. Honey bear is another name for the kinkajou, which is a member of the raccoon family, and the koala is a marsupial.
