  1. Just keep a look-out for bears, keep your distance from them. If you do happen to see any bears or cross paths with one, just back away slowly -- and don't turn your back on them until THEY are out of sight.

It's a lot less expensive than buying "special" pepper sprays or aerosol air-horns. And it's a lot quieter. Plus, some bears just get mad when someone foolishly makes a lot of noise.

It's the bears' home, so treat them with due respect.

  2. I've never heard of bear horns, but I have heard of bear bells.  They recommend you put bells on your clothing or shoes so they ring when you are hiking and the bears know you are coming.

  3. i have never heard of bear horns. i have heard of the bear spray and have been told by many park rangers that it is more effective than a high caliber pistol. i have also heard of bear bells but it seems to me that if you make a lot of noise by shuffling your feet, whistling,or talking to a friend while you walk it will have the same effect. the last thing you want to do is startle a bear , if they hear you coming they will most likely avoid you but if they don't that is what the spray is for .

  4. Bad idea according to this website from the NPS: http://www.nps.gov/ccso/bears.htm, but some anecdotes suggest it might scare some bears regardless. An air horn is an air horn, just like pepper spray is pepper spray. You really think the Counter Assault company makes a "special" kind of pepper spray that works especially well on bears. No sir, it's all capsaicin and just the same. (although the pepper spray I use actually has UV

dye in it to later identify my assailants, which, luckily for them, have kept their distance so far.) I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find one with a picture of a bear on it at twice the price. http://www.macecanada.com/canada/product...
