Bearcats win the 2011 Endicott Invitational Tournament
Three teams participated in a popular weekend tournament held in Beverly, in the state of Massachusetts. The tournament also featured men’s teams that ranked number 13, number seven and number 12. The venue for the event was the Endicott College. Yes, you’ve guessed it right. We are talking about none other than the 2011 Endicott Invitational Tournament.
The two-day tournament saw competitive matches between teams including the number 13 ranking Bearcats, number seven ranked MIT and Emmanuel, which is ranked at the 12th position. The story did not take on the traditional theme of the team playing at the home ground taking the advantage. Rather, the tournament was taken for its own by the visiting Bearcats.
The first day of the tournament, which was a Saturday, the Bearcats emerged victorious after defeating the SUNY-IT and Vassar volleyball teams. They went on to seal the deal on Sunday by winning the two matches scheduled against MIT and Emmanuel. Therefore, at the conclusion of the famous New England weekend tournament, the Bearcats left with a 4-0 record, while MIT scrapped a 3-0. Emmanuel was able to end with three wins at the expense of one loss.
At the closing ceremonies, awards were given to the deserving candidates. The title of the Tournament MVP was received by Pablo Oliveira. The All-Tournament Team got the name of http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/roster.aspx?rp_id=1238 added to it.
Winning the two matches on Sunday not only enabled the Bearcats to take home the trophy, it also gave them an opportunity to redeem themselves. The Bearcats had suffered defeats at the hands of both MIT and Emmanuel earlier in the season. The defeats were received during the two day New Paltz Tournament that was held over the weekend of the previous month, on the 22nd and 23rd.
The Bearcats did not do a shabby job of taking revenge. They secured a win over MIT by making a clean sweep over the team. At the end of the match, the score board showed final set scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 30-28.
Prominent amongst the Bearcat players were the names of Eryk Kowalski and Oliveria. Kowalski was able to post a total of 14 kills for his team while Oliveria kept the score board ticking with 13 kills of his own. Echevarria did a commendable job of registering 40 assists in the duration of the entire match.
The last match of the tournament was played against Emmanuel that went up till four sets. The Bearcats won the first one by 25-20, but suffered a loss in the second at 18-25. After that, the Bearcats did not let themselves down and went on to win the last two sets of the game at 25-19 and 25-16 respectively.
