Im setting up a tank for a bearded dragon. I know if the temp at night is above 65 degrees it should be ok. If it goes below this temp i want to a ceramic heat lamp, my question is how many watts should i use. Im using a 20 gal long tank. Another thing is, are there alternatives for providing heat at night if temp goes below 65 degrees. I do want to stay away from blue/red lights because I've researched that they bother the dragons at night. Also under the tank heater is a no no for me.

  1. 65 is fine for the lowest you should allow, any colder and you will freeze him. The night cycle bulbs do NOT bother them, I had a blue one for Jibblet's tank and nothing bad ever happened. The red light they aren't even supossed to be able to see. If you want to try a heat rock, wrap it in a old sock a few times so you still feel the heat but you protect the dragon from the burning hot surface. I would say the lowest wattage possible 50-75 for the ceramic (if available) and get the open dome for it as I have heard that the closed dome can cause  them to overheat and explode. Remember that he won't be able to stay in the 20 for long and you will need a 40 gal bredder at least when fully grown. Good luck.

  2. dont worry too much about heat at night. a glass tank can hold heat long enough and beardeies always heat back up in the light in the morning. Dont ever use heat rocks!!! they can burn your dragon

    Around 75 watts is good

an easy way to contain heat over night is to thro a towel or blanket over the lid of the tank @ night so that not as much heat escapes

no heat rocks! no heat rocks!no heat rocks! no heat rocks!no heat rocks! no heat rocks!no heat rocks! no heat rocks!no heat rocks! no heat rocks!no heat rocks! no heat rocks!

for night time colored lights shouldnt be bothering a dragon seing as they close their eyes to sleep

no heat rocks! no heat rocks!
