Bears' GM Jerry Angelo lost for words to describe Bears ailment – NFL News
Chicago Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo is lost for words to describe his team’s four game losing streak after game week 11 when Jay Cutler suffered a season ending thumb injury.
The Bears were sitting pretty in second position of the National Football Conference North and were likely to qualify for the playoffs wildcard round. Now after losing four games straight and with a 7-7 record the Bears need to
win their encounter against Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay Packers to have any chance of qualifying for the post season.
Angelo talking to the Bears official website is surprised with the way the season has unravelled.
“No, not like this one. Things were going very well. We were feeling really good about the team and had no reason not to.” Angelo said.
Now those good feelings have been replaced by fear since that fateful game against the San Diego Chargers. Regular quarterback Jay Cutler played the whole game but after the match Coach Lovie Smith announced the news that would
have huge repercussions on the Bears season. Jay Cutler had injured his thumb and would not be available for the rest of the regular season.
Backup quarterback Caleb Hanie had to step in for Cutler but he failed miserably in the task. Hanie started the last four games for the Bears losing all four. The replacement quarterback was intercepted nine times in four games
and created only three passing touchdowns.
Hanie’s poor performances and lack of progress in the offense has now led Coach Lovie Smith to bench him for the must win Christmas Day encounter against Green Bay Packers. The quarterback will be replaced by veteran Josh McCown
who signed with the Bears as a free agent when Cutler was injured.
Jerry Angelo knew that Hanie would take time to adjust to the spotlight of playing in the National Football League.
“When we made the switch with the quarterback we knew it was going to be an adjustment. But unfortunately we weren’t able to do the things we needed to do to win games, particularly in the close ones.”
The General Manager also laid down the gauntlet for the players for the final two games.
“We want to make sure that when we make decisions about players that we do a total evaluation over the whole season. If it’s a 16-game season, we’re going to evaluate all 16 games. As a player, your résumé is that tape.”
The Bears players have their work cut out for themselves against Green Bay Packers and the players will be fired up against their biggest division rivals. A victory will gain bragging rights as well as a chance to make the playoffs
they were so sure of reaching early in the season.
