Bears' safety Major Wright confirmed out for Sunday's game against Broncos – NFL News
Chicago Bears fans have been waiting with baited breath on the status of regular safety Major Wright, who missed all of this week’s practice sessions with a sprained ankle.
Coach Lovie Smith, however, has finally come out with the unwanted bad news that Wright will be short for Sunday’s crucial encounter against Denver Broncos.
"Major Wright didn't come around as much as we wanted him to," Smith said. "So we have three of our guys that we normally count on that won't play this week. Besides that, we're in pretty good shape; can't wait to get out to Denver
and play them."
The two others are running back Matt Forte who is out with a knee injury and will not be able to take the field for a couple of weeks, and star quarterback Jay Cutler who is unavailable for the regular season with a fractured thumb.
The Bears will now turn to Craig Steltz, who will make just his second start of the season to stop the in-form Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.
Steltz replaced Wright during the Bears painful 10-3 loss to Kansas City Chiefs with the latter unable to continue with the game. Steltz made nine tackles during the game earning praise for his performance.
"[Steltz] played well last week," Smith said. "So that gives us a lot more confidence. But we had confidence in him anyway. He's been in that role before. [He's] a good, solid backup that tends to stand up when we ask him to. Craig
should be just fine."
The Bears are on a two-game losing streak since Cutler’s injury. Backup quarterback Caleb Hanie has struggled to deliver the offensive momentum and the Bears are in danger of losing their advantage in the race for two NFC wildcard
playoff spots.
With Matt Forte also out of Sunday’s line-up, the Bears offense looks very light on attacking talent and it will take some big performances to get any favourable result against Denver Broncos.
The Broncos are on a five-game winning run and have changed the entire complexion of their season. Quarterback Tim Tebow has played a major role in the comeback and the Broncos are now joint top with Oakland Raiders in the American
Football Conference West Division.
The Bears should hope that Tebow has an off-day on Sunday and they can get a result to keep their advantage over the chasing Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons for the playoff spots.
