Bears’ GM Jerry Angelo rules out any change in approach to stars contracts – NFL News
Chicago Bears are in all likelihood out of the running for the playoffs as they lost their third straight game this Sunday against Denver Broncos 10-13 at the Soldier Field.
With little chance of making the playoffs, talks are turning to contract negotiations for the Bears stars, some of whom are injured.
The franchise’s General Manager Jerry Angelo, however, has made it clear that the injuries are not going to affect the Bears approach to offers.
At the moment, two of the Bears key players, running back Matt Forte and quarterback Jay Cutler, are out of the team due to sprained knee and broken thumb respectively.
When asked whether the injury to Forte, who was on the verge of negotiating a new long term with Chicago Bears before his layoff, will have any impact on the Bears approach he replied.
"His agent (Adisa Bakari) asked us that, he posed that question to us months ago and we told him, 'No, that (an injury) would not change our thinking in negotiations,'" said Angelo.
The general manager is also unsure about the return of Forte and said that more information would be available about Forte in the next week.
"We will probably know more next week," he said. "Just see how he is feeling. Right now, he is feeling good, the rehab is going well but we haven't really set a definite timetable. We'll know a little bit more next week."
The running back is a major cog in the Bears’ offense along with quarterback Jay Cutler who has his season ended after the injury. Cutler has undergone surgery and is going through rehabilitation to get back as quickly as possible
to the field.
The Bears, who are 7-5, are likely to be without both the offensive stars for the rest of the regular season. Cutler’s injury has hit the franchise hardest as the Bears have lost three games in a row in the quarterback’s absence.
His replacement, Caleb Hanie, has failed to effectively plug the hole.
With this week’s loss to the Denver Broncos in overtime, confidence is running low in the Bears dressing room and it will take a herculean effort for the team to raise themselves against Seattle Seahawks in game week 15 to keep
their playoff-hopes alive.
