Bears’ WR Sam Hurd arrested on charges of drug peddling – NFL News
A shocking news report on Thursday has rocked the Chicago Bears locker room.
Wide Receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on Wednesday night by undercover federal agents on the charge of intention to distribute drugs in the Chicago area.
Hurd was arrested after dealing with an undercover U.S federal government agent to procure marijuana and cocaine at a Chicago area steakhouse. The wide receiver is accused of negotiating to purchase around five to ten kilograms
of cocaine for $ 25,000 a kilogram and a thousand pounds of marijuana for $ 450 per pound with the intent of distribution.
He is also alleged to have confessed to distributing around four kilograms of cocaine every week but his previous supplier could not keep up with demands. Leaving the steakhouse after the conversation Hurd was arrested by waiting
police and sent to jail.
Hurd who was met by reporters in jail still believed that he was a Bears player. The wide receiver has hired David Kenner as his attorney who has previously successfully represented rapper Snoop Dogg from murder charges.
"Sam intends to fight these charges, and we intend to defend him fully," said Kenner."We have complete confidence in him."
"They start off looking terrible, and then we end up with `not guiltys,” he added.
The investigation into Hurd’s drug peddling is not new and is part of a long-term sting by undercover agents who were on the case. Police have been investigating his alleged activities since July 2011 when he was still with the
Dallas Cowboys.
Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith has been stunned by the news. He had no idea of Hurd’s arrest until it came on the news.
"We came to work like we normally do on a Thursday. Sam wasn't in meetings this morning," Smith said. "From there of course we started searching, trying to find out why a player wouldn't be here. So there was no tipoff, didn't
know it was coming. Again, total surprise."
Hurd has not communicated with any of his teammates as of now. When news broke the Bears players expressed their shock and horror. Linebackers Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher described the wide receiver as well liked in the locker
room and a nice guy. They also added that Hurd would practice and work hard every time however, they do not know much about him or his activities outside of the training ground.
Hurd will remain in Police remand until Friday as his attorneys work on a bail bond. The case will be heard in Texas according to reports.
