Bears confident Hanie can deliver after poor performance against Raiders – NFL News
Caleb Hanie can rest easy after his performance on Sunday against Raiders as Chicago Bears have full confidence in their quarterback for now.
Hanie, filling in for the injured Jay Cutler, showed his inexperience during Bears 25-20 loss against Oakland Raiders in game week 12 of the National Football League snapping a five-game winning run. The quarterback threw three
interceptions during the game and his costly mistakes were a major factor in Chicago Bears loss on Sunday.
However, his Coach and teammates provided encouragement to the quarterback who started his first game this season and Hanie is now looking forward to repaying their faith in his ability when Chicago Bears take on Kansas City Chiefs
next week.
Coach Lovie Smith said, "It's tough coming in your first game," Smith said. "Just think about starting (early in) the season you have some mistakes that you won't have later in the year. But we have a small curve. We've got to
get it down as soon as we possibly can. I saw enough for us to build off today. Next week, you'll see better play from the quarterback position."
Teammates also came to provide encouragement to the 26-year-old quarterback who in his own words was a bit jittery and amped up for the game.
Linebacker Brian Urlacher said of Hanie’s performance, "I don't think he did a bad job. He kept us in the game. If we play better defense, we win the game."
Hanie had a tough first game of the season. With Cutler out of the side for the duration of the season, it is up to him to help his team into the playoffs.
The quarterback started the game looking nervous and was intercepted thrice in the first half. He also had two touchdown passes as he covered 254 yards during the game, but completed only 18 passes from 36 attempts for a poor
50.0 per cent completion rate. The quarterback’s hesitation also resulted in a failed Spike attempt resulting in Bears losing their last chance for a final push.
Hanie also felt better after talking to his teammates and is looking forward to the game against Chiefs.
"I feel a little more comfortable now," he said. "It's bad we had to lose because of some turnovers.”
