Bears’ offensive guard Edwin Williams ready to step up against San Diego Chargers – NFL News
Offensive guard Edwin Williams is in line for his first start this season to replace the injured Chris Williams against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday with offensive coordinator Mike Martz ready to give the 24 year old the opportunity.
“He wasn’t quite ready last year,” Martz said. “The new system, getting used to everything, he got a little overwhelmed. Having been here now for a while and been through the preseason, we feel very good about him. I’d be very
concerned if it was the situation that it was last year when we had to have him come in and play. [But] I think he’s ready to play [now].”
Chris Williams was placed on the injured reserve ending his season after suffering a wrist injury and undergoing surgery later in the second quarter during the Bears 37-13 defeat of the Detroit Lions. Edwin Williams was sent in
to substitute Chris and provided an impressive performance on the left guard helping the Bears to victory.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler believes the 24-year-old will face a challenge and will have to work quickly to get acquainted with his partners and reach an understanding with team mates as the season goes into its crucial phase.
“Edwin is going to have to step in there and do a really good job. Chris was playing at a high level and we can’t miss a beat, especially not in November or December.”
Williams signed for the Bears in 2010 after being released by the Washington Red Skins and started three games during 2010 with the Bears losing two of those three games. The 24-year-old was overwhelmed by the change of tactics
and scenery and couldn’t settle into the squad.
After a complete pre-season and getting accustomed to Mike Martz tactics Williams is ready to stake his claim as a Bears regular.
The Bears are second in the National Football Conference North Division with a 6-3 record and go into this game on the back of a four game winning streak. San Diego Chargers on a four game losing streak are not a side to be taken
lightly and will provide a tough test for the Bears.
