Bears’ sign veteran QB Josh McCown, miss out on waived Kyle Orton – NFL News
Chicago Bears announced yesterday the signing of veteran quarterback Josh McCown after failing to get waived Denver Broncos quarterback and ex-Bear Kyle Orton who was picked up by Kansas City Chiefs.
Chicago Bears have agreed a one year deal with McCown who is familiar with the offensive Coach Mike Martz tactics and will therefore take little time to settle in. Bears have been looking for a quarterback since Jay Cutler injured
his thumb against San Diego Chargers last Sunday and had to undergo surgery which will keep the inform quarterback out for the rest of the regular season.
Their first choice was Broncos Kyle Orton who had been waived from the roster just a few days ago but was picked up by Kansas City Chiefs who had a higher waiver priority.
Caleb Hanie has now taken up the duties as Bears primary playmaker and McCown will provide back up with Rookie Nathan Enderle also waiting for his opportunity.
McCown was happy to get a chance to come back to the National Football League and believes he is ready to make an impact and help out in Bears playoff quest saying
"I don't think this is a story of a guy who has been out in the woods not doing anything,'' McCown, 32, said."I've been around football. My head's in it. Obviously there will be some rust and I have to get used to the speed of
it again. But I'm not that far removed from it.''
Bears primary quarterback Jay Cutler had some good news for fans after successfully undergoing surgery yesterday and is looking to make a return during the playoffs.
Caleb Hanie who was backup to Cutler as he watched the playmaker power Chicago to five straight wins as they reached joint second spot in the National Football Conference North Division with Detroit Lions is excited about getting
his chance this season. He has also gone on record to specify that he is in no way worried by the signing of McCown saying, "I talked to Lovie (Smith) this morning and he just said whatever veteran quarterback we bring in, you don't need to worry about it.
You're our guy. That was it."
