  1. As stated in other answers - there a number of Beatles attractions in Liverpool. There is the Beatles Story Museum at the Albert Dock, the Magical Mystery Tour bus trip around the city which goes to a number of Beatles-related locations, both Paul McCartney's and John Lennon's childhood houses are open to the public.  There are lots of Beatles themed places/shops on Matthew Street, including The Cavern (not the original Cavern club, but a decent enough reproduction).  There is even a newly-opened Beatles Hotel -'The Hard Day's Night' which has Beatles themed rooms.

Even if you aren't a Beatles fan, there are lots of things to do and see there; more museums than any other British city outside London, incredible architecture including the largest gothic cathedral in Europe and more pubs, clubs and restaurants than you can shake a stick at.  The New 'Liverpool One' shopping centre has just opened - it is apparently (I think) the largest city-centre shopping area in Britain.

And it is the 2008 European capital of culture so there are hundreds of events going on throughout the year.

Also Liverpool has the lowest per-capita crime rate of any large metropolitan area in Britain.

It's about 4 hours by car from London and the same by train - somewhere in the region of 250 miles away, if memory serves.

  2. a lot of the Beatles stuff is (obviously) in Liverpool which is a fair way out from London ... you can check train times and prices at www.thetrainline.com ... Liverpool is the European capital of culture this year so there's an awful lot going on there, perhaps you'd like to do an internet search to find out what ... Abbey Road however is in London, it's the recording studio they used and the famous picture of them going across the zebra crossing was taken just outside Abbey Road studios ... whether or not you'd find any of the places associated with The Beatles satisfying to visit is debatable and a matter of personal taste ... however as long as you've got enough time in the UK to allow a trip out of London, Liverpool would certainly be an interesting place to visit especially with it's long maritime history and its quirky sense of humour, you could always take a ferry across the River Mersey!

one of the most famous images associated with Pink Floyd is the pink pig flying over Battersea Power Station in London ... you'll probably find Battersea Power Station quite disappointing because it's become increasingly derelict as successions of people argue over what to do with this iconic landmark

  3. Liverpool is about 220 miles away from london, about a 4 hour drive

  4. In london there is a Beatles Walk tour that will take you to sites associated with the Beatles- including Abbey Road- the guide  richard is very knowledgable-however you can't go IN to any of the sites--

Added- if you do make it to Liverpool ( 3-4 hrs by train) go to the Beatles Storyon the Albert Docks-kind of a Beatles Musuem -I enjoyed it when I went seveal yrs ago
