Beatriz Garcia Vidagany upsets Kimiko Date-Krumm in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
22-year-old Spaniard Beatriz Garcia Vidagany upset 40-year-old Japanese, Kimiko Date-Krumm in straight sets to advance in qualifiers of the 2011 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Sunday.
Vidagany overpowered the 2nd seeded Japanese in one hour and fifty-one minutes at Porsche arena in Stuttgart. She warded off late resistance from Date-Krumm to register a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory on her first meeting.
Ranked 183 in the WTA Premier event rankings, Vidagany hasn’t had much progress this season but she displayed her magnificent skills at Bogota where she reached quarter-finals, through qualifiers, before losing to her 7th
seeded countrywoman Lourdes Dominguez Lino. She carried the same spark in this WTA event and bounced back from a set down to win against German wild card enterer Annika Beck with a breadstick in the first round. She then triumphed over the seeded Japanese
to advance in the tournament for her maiden career title.
In the opening set, she slammed two ferocious aces and had a much better first serve share of 73 percent as compared to Japanese’s 67 percent. Vidagany also registered an impressive 69 percent win on it and saved two out of three
breakpoints she faced. The Spaniard found eight breakpoint opportunities and converted three to her advantage to clinch the set with an assuring 6-2 score line.
She carried her winning momentum into the second set and despite having a lower first serve share and clobbering two double faults, Vidagany broke the Japanese serve three times. The Spaniard registered a convincing 66 percent
win on her first serve share but she saved only four out of seven breakpoints she faced, leading the set to tiebreaker. She eventually sealed the set with a 7-6(4) win by prevailing in it.
55th ranked Date-Krumm on the other hand hasn’t reached far in any tournament this season. Despite making an awesome impact in many WTA events she entered last year especially at Osaka where she made a final berth, the
Japanese lost her winning ways this year. The elder one downed Fin Emma Laine in troublesome three sets in the first round but exited from Stuttgart Open in the second round of the qualifiers. She played poorly throughout the match and clobbered several unforced
errors and three double faults which made the difference in the end.
The Spaniard will next face Michaella Krajicek of Nethrlands who also upset a seeded player to reach this spot. The Dutchwoman triumphed over 7th seeded Austrian Yvonne Meusburger by a 7-6(4), 6-2 score line. She converted
all six of her breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch the match in straight sets.
