Beatriz Recari shares lead in the opening round of the LPGA Championship
Beatriz Recari of Spain stunned the spectators on the opening day of the Wegmans LPGA Championship, as she fired a 69 to share the lead with two other contenders.
Recari kicked off the round at Locust Hill Country Club – Pittsford, New York, in an impressive style, as she made comfortable strokes on most of the holes.
Ryann O’Toole of the United States and Giulia Sergas of Italy shared the lead with the Recari, as they shot a 69 each.
The match turned into a tough battle, as the three leaders tried to surge past each other.
Analysts said that the results of the opening round are a little surprising, as most of the top-ranked players stood outside the top-10 at the end of the round.
The current world number one Yani Tseng, who is the hot favourite for the coveted title, stands tied for the 80th place after she posted an unimpressive 76.
Like the top-ranked Tseng, most of the other big names could not perform well. However, Recari was quick to capitalise on the situation.
The Spaniard parred the first six holes and shot a birdie on the difficult par-3 7th hole. On the back nine, she stepped up pressure on her rivals by draining three birdies.
Recari received a big round of applaus from the spectators, when she recorded three straight birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th hole, strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
Speaking to the media about her stellar performance, the 25-year-old golfer said that she is in high spirits after sharing the lead in an event featuring top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) players.
She said that she played her best game in the opening round, which has given her a mental boost.
“It definitely feels great.  It feels almost relieving because I have been playing really well for a long time.  The scores didn't happen the way I wanted,” the Spanish prodigy said.
“I went on the range this morning.  I was feeling very fresh, and I was hitting the ball really well.  So coaches here said, just go out there, have fun, you're hitting the ball great, so you are going to play really, really well”.
