Beau Hossler's dream crushed, Jordan Spieth takes the honour
The US Open concluded on Sunday, June 17, with its own set of highs and lows. Among those who managed to shine on the course was an American teenager, Jordan Spieth.
He was able to hold his nerve in the challenging condition encountered by many at the Olympic Club.
Spieth finished the last round with a 70 to take the US Open low Amateur title on Sunday.
The interesting thing is that at the beginning of the week, Jordan Spieth was not even at the Olympic Club. It was only when Brandt Snedeker withdrew from the tournament that he had a chance to play at the 2012 US Open Low Amateur championship.
Spieth also said that he did not expect himself to get in but luck was on his side.
He is one of the three amateurs who made the cut and levelled the scores of Tiger Woods. The eighteen-year-old was very satisfied with his performance.
Spieth is following the footsteps of Tiger Woods and has managed to win the US junior Amateur numerous times.
After the end of the championship Spieth said, “I was confident coming in, I just wanted to play consistent golf. I kind of thought that I could give myself a chance at making a run at it. After two rounds I was not able to do that, but I wanted to be low
amateur”.
The teenager finished two shots clear of the 17-year-old Californian Beau Hossler, who could not cope up with the pressure and registered a double bogey at the last hole to finish with a 76.
Hossler started the rounds nervously, which obviously did cost him the title.
Hossler bogeyed seven times and he knew the momentum was slipping away from him, whereas, on the other side, Spieth managed birdies from the 7th to the 9th hole to turn the tide towards his side.
According to him, the way he played on the weekend means that he can play at the top level as well.
Only once before Spieth had a chance to play at the Olympic Club, who knows if he had managed to play before at this course, his score might have been even better.
Spieth and Hossler are very good friends off the course and both of them will be competing for the longhorn gear next season.
