Becky Brewerton lifts the Tenerife ladies Match Play title on ladies European Tour
Becky Brewerton of Abergele North Wales, continued with her top form to finally lift the Tenerife Ladies Match Play title on Sunday June, 12 at the scenic Golf Las Americas, Canary Island.
This was Brewerton’s third title on the tour and his fondness for the course returned to help her in her bid for the top slot. She has finished runners up thrice at Tenerife and was delighted with her achievement.
“I’ve finished second three times in Tenerife so it’s nice to finally get a win and obviously it’s been a while since I’ve won, so it’s a brilliant feeling,” said Brewerton.“I think Tenerife is a place where I always get a little bit of luck as well. I made
lots of birdies and threw in a couple of hairy moments as well. A few mistakes but just about managed to get it done. I’ve been playing well all week and it’s nice to obviously finish off well.”
Brewerton has done a splendid job on both forms of the sport on the weekend and started off her opening round with an overwhelming win over Australian Kristie Smith with 8 & 6 in the Match Play format. She later went over to defeat the 79-time winner on
the tour, Laura Davies in the second round on Saturday on a tight Playoff.
Brewerton started off her final round with loads of confidence, in a field which only had eight players left. She birdied the second, fifth, and seventh hole but stumbled with a bogey on par-five, 9th before making the turn. She pulled in another
birdie on the 10th but dropped a shot at the 11th. The 28-year-old carded three more birdies to finally close the day with four-under, 68 with a total of seven birdies in the round.
Brewerton’s nearest contenders Nikki Garrett and Spaniard Carlota Ciganda finished one shot behind the leader with their respective scores of 69. England’s Rebecca Hudson finished for an outright third while Lydia Hall of Wales settled for the fourth spot
with her 71.
Brewerton is hoping to make it into the Solheim Cup in September and will need a few more strong finishes for the season to do so. She collected a cheque of €40,000 as the winner’s share.
