Beckham, Cameron and Prince William strive to make England’s bid for 2018 a favourite (Part 1)
David Beckham along with Prince William and the British Prime Minister, David Cameron have been busy during the past few days as they try and repair the damage that has been done to the England 2018 bid due to BBC’s Panorama investigation
into FIFA’s corruption circles. The three aristocratic individuals are pulling all strings before 2nd of Decembers, executive committee vote which will decide the fate of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. England are one of the forerunners to
host the 2018 World Cup alongside the likes of Spain and Portugal as well as Russia.
Beckham and Cameron met Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Tuesday afternoon and it is believed that the Panorama investigation was one of the topics under discussion in the meeting. The Panorama investigation has alleged that FIFA’s officials
have been involved in unethical corrupt activities which have hurt the face of the football internationally.
David Beckham explained the effort of the Panorama investigation on England’s 2018 bid, as he said, "Me, David Dein, the Prime Minister and other members of the team sat down with President Blatter this morning and it was one of the topics
that we spoke about and something that was cleared away.”
He added, "What we made clear to him, and what he already knows, is that if we get the World Cup in 2018 our media are right behind us, our media are so positive towards the sport and towards it growing in our country. It is something
that could so big in our country. I think that President Blatter is well aware of the support that we will have for FIFA and the World Cup.”
Beckham, who played for Manchester United in the English Premier League during the prime of his career, went onto say, "He (Sepp Blatter) brought it up within the talks and obviously it was not the easiest of things to talk about. He realized
that a lot of it was old stuff and a lot of it was said. A lot of things go on and it is out of our hands."
After holding a crucial meeting with Blatter, the English delegation met with Warner, FIFA’s vice president. England are believed to be second in the favourites list currently behind Spain and Portugal’s bid for the 2018 World Cup.
Cameron, British Prime Minister also made some comments after the meetings as he said, "I've only got one focus here and that's trying to bring the World Cup home for England. That's going to be my focus, talking to the decision-makers
and pressing them on the brilliance of English football and what we can bring for this bid. That's going to be my concern, nothing else. I think we have got a very strong team here - Prince William, David Beckham and myself and we are going to be making the
arguments for England 2018."
