Beckham tweets fellow Brit Murray
David Beckham is putting his hopes on British success at Wimbledon following England's humiliating FIFA World Cup performance, where the team was eliminated with a disappointing 4-1 defeat by Germany.
Beckham, who is currently nursing an injury, sent fellow Brit Andy Murray a text message, wishing him congratulations on his third consecutive appearance in a quarter final.
Unfortunately, Beckham's inspirational talks with the England team did not have much of the desired effect in South Africa.
However, Murray was reportedly "delighted" to have a show of support from the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star midfielder.
Murray posted the following message on Twitter: "Thanks for all the good luck and well done messages today. Always nice to get one from David Beckham but trying to read them all."
An insider who is quite close to Beckham revealed that apparently: "David's always been very supportive of Andy, watching his games whenever he can.
"They have met several times in the past and keep in contact - Andy was delighted to hear from him yesterday."
Murray can save face for England
Especially after England's embarrassing World Cup defeat, Murray will continue his title bid at the All England Club with even more vigour and conviction.
The 23-year-old Murray is currently in impeccable form, not having dropped a set for the entire first week of Wimbledon, and defeating the power-serving American Sam Querrey 7-5 6-3 6-4 yesterday in their fourth round match.
Although Murray's triumphant efforts at the All England Club have been put into the background by the football happenings in South Africa, he will undoubtedly have the eyes of the nation upon him, as England harrows for a home court win. Truly, the Brits would love to prove that the England defeat by Germany was just an unlucky slip, and that the nation has sports stars worthy of bringing home a Grand Slam trophy. No doubt, Murray is feeling the pressure.
Murray keeps his cool
However, the Scot maintains that things are not too out of hand. "The build-up was a lot quieter, there were less journalists around, less photographers. But that was it.
"Once the tournament starts, I don't really pay any attention to the press and what's going on because it's just not worth it. It can only be a distraction. So it's better just to stay away from it," he said.
Murray recently commented that Beckham was the most famous celebrity figure that he had had the pleasure of meeting. Whether that still stands following his publicized meeting with the Queen at Wimbledon is up to debate.
Murray continued training today as cloudy skies gave the Wimbledon tournament fears of possible rain.
Fans waiting outside the All England Club were comforted that the rainy weather would not cause too much disruption as showers eased prior to any matches starting.
A spokesman for the tournament said: "There's a lot more cloud around compared with recent days this morning and we've seen our first outbreaks of rain of the championships so far."
The crowd has been graced with seven continuous days of play, thanks to sunny, hot days, with temperatures of 29C (84.2F). Although there have not been too many rain delays, there have been match delays due to marathon long games, as in the case of Isner and Mahut's record-breaking three-day long play. The crowds have been flocking to the star-studded matches, with the Williams sisters drawing some of the bigger crowds in the last few days.
Top seeded Serena Williams took on China's Na Li out on Centre Court, while her sister Venus was facing off on Court One against Tsvetana Pironkova.
