Beckham undeterred by Capello comments
David Beckham is seemingly unflustered by comments made by England boss Fabio Capello on his England future last month. Capello somewhat distastefully examined that Beckham was now “probably a little bit old” to play for his country again, as he looked to introduce younger, fresher bodies to the national setup.
However, Becks has reacted with great tranquillity on the subject, brushing off suggestions his England career is over. The former England skipper claimed his relationship with Capello was still strong and that once he is over his current Achilles injury, he’ll look to add to his 115 England caps. He stated: "My main objective at the moment is to get myself fit, to get myself playing and what happens after that we’ll see. I've always said that I want to be available to play for my country."
Now 35, Beckham offers vast experience to any side, and with a number of youngsters getting their chance under Capello’s post-World Cup regime, Beckham could be a perfect foil with all his years of experience. Indeed the former AC Milan and Manchester United star was quick to point out his assets: "The manager is aware that there still needs to be some old heads in there, some experience. If I'm part of that, great.”
With England impressing in their opening Euro 2012 qualifiers, Beckham will struggle to get in the squad when he is fit. Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott both impressed in Beckham’s favoured right midfield role, so realistically, his chances appear slim. Few would write him off just yet though, as he has already shown the desire and never-say-die attitude to force his way back in before, so why not again? Whatever happens, his passion and pride at playing for his country will forever endear him to the nation, even if his best days are far behind him.
