Beckie Herbert saves England from defeat against Korea as the match ends at 2-2
Beckie Herbert saved England from a relentless defeat against South Korea in the first of the day-two encounters at the 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy in Amsterdam. The match was full of entertainment, but eventually ended in a draw at score of 2-2.
England was leading by one goal to nil at the interval, but the Korean women bounced back pretty well in the second half before the late reply by Beckie Herbert that led the match to a draw. Both of the English goals were scored by Beckie Herbert while Kim
Da Rae made the double strike for South Korea.
“We were dominant in the first half and Maddie made a good save from their penalty corner in the last minute of the half from what was Koreas’ only real opportunity," Danny Kerry, the head coach of the English side stated after the match.
"We lost our way slightly for ten minutes in the second half but we showed good character to get back to 2-2 and had a good chance to win it in the last minute,” Kerry further stated about their efforts in the ending part of the game.
England dominated South Korea for most of the time in the first half with some wonderful moves throughout the first thirty-five minutes. Their best effort came into play in the 21st minute, when Beckie Herbert scored the opening goal of the match
and put her team ahead of their opponents by a goal. Their lead lasted till the interval as no further strike was made in the remaining time of the first half. The Koreans too had their scoring chances, but the English resistance was to stop the Koreans from
doing any damage. The first half ended at 1-0 to England.
In the second half, the Koreans played more attacking hockey and found early chances in the second half. One of those chances was converted into an equaliser in the opening minutes of the second half, when Kim Da Rae made a faultless strike into the English
goal. The English women too played wonderfully, but remained unlucky on some occasions.
The Koreans took the lead just ten minutes before the conclusion, when Kim Da Rae again scored in 60th minute. But, just three minutes after their lead, Herbert made her second strike for England when she converted a stunning effort from Ashleigh
Ball and Helen Richardson into their second goal to end the match at 2-2.
