Becky Brewerton grabs early lead in first round of Open de España Femenino 2011 – Golf news
The latest episode of the Open de España Femenino 2011 on the Ladies European Tour is in full swing at the La Quinta Golf & Country Club in Spain, on one of the brightest and warmest days and the turnout has been impressive so far.
Becky Brewerton of Wales has posted early success at one of her favourite Spanish courses where she won the Tenerife Ladies Match Play event earlier in June. She is three shots better than the rest of the field so far and has scored six-under for the moment
playing her front nine. Brewerton is currently leading the first round and will be making the turn shortly to tee-off for her back nine.
Denmark’s Line Vedel, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, Englishwomen Melissa Reid and Scott Lynn Kenney are all tied for the second slot with their respective scores of three-under. A further group of four players is tied for the seventh place pulling in two-under
on their front nines.
This is the last of LET events on the calendar before the tour will finally move towards the most revered events on the circuit, the Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle where American and European teams will lock horns for the trophy. Melissa Reid, Becky Brewerton
and rookie Hedwall have already made it into the 12-player field of the tournament.
Laura Davies will be one of the only players in the history of the event who has played every single Solheim Cup since its inception in 1990. She will be making her 12th appearance at the event and has earned 23.5 points on the European team,
the second highest after Annika Sorenstam and is trailing the legendary Sorenstam by 0.5 points. Davies will also be the oldest player, aged 47, on the field and has a whooping 79 titles worldwide.
Diana Luna had a disappointing day so far and has managed a meagre one-under through her opening 12 holes. She is tied for the 11th spot alongside Zuzana Kamasova and Karen Lunn.
Some strong players on the field have yet to tee-off for their first round including rookie Klara Spilkova, Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte Clement, Davies, Florentyna Parker, Rachel Jennings, Lynette Brooky, Carlota Ciganda, Anja Monke, Jade Schaeffer and
Sahra Hassan.
