Becky Brewerton surges to the top in the opening round of Open de España Femenino
Becky Brewerton of Wales posted another impressive performance on the opening round of the Open de España Femenino at La Quinta Golf Resort in Marbella, Benahavis on the Costa del Sol to stay ahead of the rest of the field.
Brewerton was one shot better than the fast approaching Liebelei Elena Lawrence of Luxemburg, Lee Anne-Pace of South Africa and Tania Besogui of Spain. The runner-up trio posted a round four-under, 68.
“I decided to try to commit to all the shots. I played quite well in Prague last week and I think the confidence carried over, so obviously delighted to start five under,” Brewerton said. “Today it was a little bit different. I wasn’t feeling quite as comfortable
on the long game but as we all know, it doesn’t matter how you hit it, if you’re putting well you’ll shoot good scores.”
Starting off from back nine first, Brewerton pulled in an amazing spree of four birdies on the opening holes before she dropped a shot at par-three, 15th. She pulled in two more birdies before making the turn. The player from Wales later admitted
that she had a chance to play in much better conditions early in the morning as the wind and temperatures soared later in the day presenting trademark Spanish venue.
“Myself and my caddie said when we saw the draw we were so glad that we had early, late. You’ve got time to recover between the rounds.”
Pace, winner of last year’s Henderson Money List, was also visibly pleased with her performance on the opening day and hopes to carry it to the next round on Friday. She won five titles on LET calendar last year but has not been able to perform equally well
in the current season.
Swede rookie Caroline Hedwall finished for a one-under, 71 after an average day on the course. She dropped three shots and made up for the loss with a blistering eagle at par-five, 14th and two birdies. She is now tied for joint 11th
along with Diana Luna, Trish Johnson, Kristie Smith, Louise Larsson, Caroline Westrup, Melissa Reid, Cassandra Kirkland, Veronica Zorzi, Lynn Kenny and Melodie Bourdy.
