Becky Hammon drops 33 as San Antonio Silver Stars beat Phoenix Mercury 102-91 – WNBA Recap
On Thursday night, Becky Hammon racked up a game high 33 points, including a trio of three-pointers in the last period, as San Antonio Silver Stars cruised past Phoenix Mercury 102-91 at AT&T Center for their second consecutive
victory.
The Silver Stars who have won four of their previous five games are now trailing the Minnesota Lynx by half a game for top position in the Western Conference. Mercury, on the other hand, lost their third straight game at the end
of their brilliant six-game winning streak. However, they still managed to maintain third position in the Western Conference with 10-7 record.
Hammon also dished out a game best seven assists, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals in the victory. The 34-year-old was phenomenal from the floor, shooting 10 for 15 from the field, including 7 for 10 from three-point range,
and 6 for 6 from free throw line.
Guard Jia Perkins came off the bench with a brilliant performance, adding 14 points, four steals and three assists. Perkins hit 6 for 13 from the floor. Guards Scholanda Robinson and Danielle Robinson contributed 11 points each
for San Antonio while Danielle Robinson also dealt out eight assists in the victory.
Hammon declared the victory as a team effort and said, “I thought we really played well as a team today,” “We did a great job of moving the ball around, and we shot better because of it. It is just a great team win.”
Four of Phoenix’s five starters reached double figures. Diana Taurasi once again led Mercury with 27 points and four assists. The player shot 7 for 11 from the field and a perfect 11 for 11 from free throw line. Candice Dupree
recorded a double-double in the loss, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Forwards Penny Taylor and Kara Braxton posted 11 points apiece for Mercury. Taylor also had five assists in the losing effort.
Phoenix’s overall shooting was better than Silver Stars but they committed 21 turnovers as compared to just eight by the hosts. San Antonio converted the turnovers of the visiting team into 32 crucial points, a figure that turned
out to be difference in the end.
Hammon scored 13 of her points in the first quarter as San Antonio carried a nine-point lead, 28-19, at the end of quarter. Phoenix struck back in the second quarter and with nearly two and half minutes to go in the break, they
pulled within one. The Silver Stars however scored five consecutive points in the passage that followed and went into the break, ahead by 48-42.
The third quarter was a high scoring one. The Silver Stars pounded 30 points in the frame, but also conceded 28 in return as they went into the final quarter with an eight point cushion. Mercury tried hard to pull back, but a barrage
of three’s by the Silver Stars ensured that they never got a sniff.
