Becky Hammon leads San Antonio Silver Stars to a 79-69 win over Los Angeles Sparks – WNBA Recap
On Monday night, Becky Hammon erupted with a game-high 26 points and five assists as the San Antonio Silver Stars beat the Los Angeles Sparks 79-69 at Staples Center.
Hammon shot 8 for 15 from the field, including 4 for 8 from three-point range, and pinned 6 of 6 free throws in the victory. Sophia Young recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Jia Perkins came off the bench with 14 points and three rebounds in the second consecutive victory of the Silver Stars.
Not even a single Los Angeles starter could reach double figures. Natasha Lacy led the Sparks with 14 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Jantel Lavender also scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Sparks, who have lost their third straight game. Jenna O'Hea also registered a double-double with a game best 11 rebounds and 12 points while LaToya Pringle finished with 11 points for the Sparks, who have lost their previous two games to the San Antonio.
The Silver Stars shot 45.3 percent (29 for 64) from the field and 77.3 percent (17 for 22) from free throw line. Sparks, on the other hand, had a cold shooting night and finished with just 31.8 percent (21 for 66) from the floor and 78.6 percent (22 for 28) from the line.
Becky Hammon was in her groove early and pounded 12 points in the first quarter as the Silver Stars sprinted to a 12-point lead, 29-17, going into the second quarter.
San Antonio stretched their lead to 15 points, 34-19, early in the second quarter before Los Angeles scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to eight points, 34-26. Silver Stars however scored six points in the last minute of the first half to maintain a 10-point lead, 42-32, at halftime.
O'Hea hit a three pointer with 06:31 to go in the third quarter to cut San Antonio’s lead to four, 45-41. The Silver Stars though struck back in the ensuing passage and widened their lead to nine points with 02:54 to go in the frame. Los Angeles countered and scored seven answered points in the last minute to make it a two-point contest, 57-55.
San Antonio broke the game open in the fourth quarter and stretched their advantage to 10 points, 71-61, late in the frame. Los Angeles didn’t give up though and scored the next six points to make it a four point game at 71-67. The Silver Stars however reeled off a 6-0 spurt down the stretch to seal the game at 79-69.
