Becky Hammon leads as San Antonio Silver Stars beat Connecticut Sun 72-59 – WNBA Recap
San Antonio Silver Stars have had a topsy-turvy last few games on their road trip. They started off by losing to the defending WNBA champions, Minnesota Lynx; they got beaten by the league leaders in the current season, the Minnesota
Lynx. After winning one against the lowly Tulsa Shock in the next encounter, they again lost to Indiana Fever.
However, when they took down the Connecticut Sun tonight, they proved a point that they can compete and beat the best. And their coach Dan Hughes knows that.
``We've been on the road so much and this last swing, we've played good teams,'' Hughes said. ``Our goal is to be a winning road team and we're 7-5. We've got a shot.''
The Silver Stars were once again led by the mercurial Becky Hammon, who posted 18 points on a 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and five assists. Sophia Young also chipped in with 15 points as the Silver Stars won the game by 72-59.
The Silver Stars moved the ball better on the night. They were unselfish in their approach and out assisted Sun 18-8. Even the Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault praised the opponents on their play. ``You all saw why San Antonio
is pretty good. I wish we had made it interesting. San Antonio is unselfish. They move the basketball.''
Hammon and Sophia were also assisted by Danielle Robinson and Jia Perkins, who came off the bench with 12 points apiece. The Silver Stars were hot from the field on the night. They shot at 50 percent from the field, including 50
percent from the three points range. Their only deficiency was from the free throw line as they managed to convert just 5 out of 10 attempts.
The Connecticut Sun, although better form the stripe, managed only 34.9 percent from the floor. They were also out played on the glass at 35-32, but did commit one turnover less than the Silver Stars. Suns were led by Asjha Jones,
who pounded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Tan White also scored 11 points for the Suns, who also got 10 points from Kara Lawson.
The Silver Star were in their zone right from the start. They went down by four early, but once Young slipped in a turnaround jumper late in the third minute, they started a procession of layups, jumpers and treys to take 25-12
lead at the end of the first quarter. Hammon scored 11 points in the first 10 minutes. She only made three in the second quarter, but by the time that happened the Silver Stars were leading by 40-23 with 3.1 seconds to go in the first half.
Connecticut missed its last 10 shots of the first half, which ended at 40-24.
``We just missed shots,'' Jones said. ``You can't really blame fatigue on that. It just happens sometimes. We started off offensively OK, but we weren't getting stops on defense. And when you're not getting things done on offense,
you have to get stops on defense, and we just didn't do that tonight.''
The one way traffic continued in the third quarter, before the Sun finally made a surge in the fourth to end the game at 59-72.
