Question:

Become a French citizen?

My grandmother was born in France. I'm wondering if I can get dual citizenship with France (currently US citizen). I know Ireland allows grandkids of Irish born to claim dual citizenship, does France?

I'd like to have dual citizenship with an EU country to travel around and work in Europe easier.

  1. France does not, have the same laws as Ireland,

you may not become a french citizen, via your grand mother, your mother should have had acquired or inherited french citizenship first, in order for you to be able to become french as well.it goes on from one generation, to the next one etc.

and? one must know the language, the # République #  of France, a bit like as in the US.....

    ps:

France DOES allow dual and multiples citizenships.

  2. Did your grandmother pass on her citizenship to her kids?

From the way you have phrased your question I'm assuming she didn't... so no you can't get a French citizenship through this way.

One or both of your parents would have to be a French citizen in order for you to become one, if not your spouse.

France does allow dual citizenship but it does not apply to your case.

Now there is also a new law that you need to be able to speak French in order to acquire the citizenship, very recent law.
