Question:

Becoming A Horseback Riding Instructor

I'd eventually like to become a horseback riding instructor at the barn where I currently ride when I'm older, but I want to know what I would need to do in order to achieve this... So, I have a few questions

How would I go about doing this?

How much does an instructor typically earn?

Do you need to be certified to do this? If so where?

Is there a certain age you need to be?

Anything else?

  1. To make an adequete living off riding instruction you have to go to college. There a certain colleges that offer a training/riding instruction program that certify you to instruct and train. If you dont you wont get competitve clients, you'll get moms and their 5yr old kids wanting pony rides every week for $25. Most succesful instructors have been certified, or have an extensive competitive riding history. And those instructors know what they are talking about, typically instruct a certain discipline, and charge anywhere from $40 to $100+ per lesson.

So based on that you have to think that its all based on your clients, and how often they take lesson. If your only teaching 2 people, every other week for say $60 a lesson. Thats only a $120 a month!! So it all depends. Usually you will start at an instructional barn as a part time instructor, and you will teach the very young, beginning riders. An you will only make a commision on your lesson fee.  And you will eventually work your way up. The other thing to think about it is will you have your own stables with your own  school horses? Or will you require your riders to have their own horses or find a schooling mount? And will you travel to their barn or will they come to you. Or must they board at your barn?

Its a lot to think about. But start by finding out how to get certified and where.

    GOOD LUCK!

  2. NO, you do not have to be certified or anything...I intsruct & I start a half an hour is 25 and an hour is 40.

  3. Ask at your barn , the teachers there can help you more then we can .

They know you and we do not ,

The best way is asking them about you and your talent as a rider tell them you want to become just like they are,

    good luck
