Question:

Becoming A Volunteer Umpire?

I'm 15 and I want to become a volunteer ump for the little league organization in my town. The fields are within biking distance and the Rec Organization provides equipment. I don't want to do it for any money so any expenses would be out of pocket. What I would like to know is this:

-How much would it cost me?

-Is it a good idea to get trained to be a little league ump?

-Should I offer my umpiring services to the league in the first place?

Thanks!

  1. What a great idea!

Who sponsors the games? Is it the YMCA? The Recreation & parks department of your city? That's the first place to call. Find out who schedules the games. Call him and ask where they get their umpires? Ask if he knows about how to get required certification to ump (usually a series of "classes" over several evenings or a Saturday. There may be a nominal cost, but it won't be prohibitive.) If he doesn't know, ask for the number of the person who umps. Every ump will have gone through the certification and will know how to get on the list.

    Have fun!
